The Little Land Project used funds donated by Adaptive Control Solutions Ltd to provide a
morning of fun and learning for children in nursery and reception at Shay Lane Primary
School in Wakefield.

The Little Land Project aims to teach the next generation about the importance of our
environment and to help improve biodiversity in urban spaces. Hundreds of wildflowers were
planted around the grounds of the school by the Gardening Club and they set up a wormery
composter that will help them to recycle food waste from the kitchen and provide lots of
lovely fertilizer for the forest school.

Shay Lane Primary has such a wonderful approach to forest school learning and already has
amazing provisions in the wildlife area which is partially wooded and filled with dens, mud
kitchens, hedgehog habitats and bug hotels. They have an inspiring approach and we were
so excited to be able to spend time with the children there.

We had a fun morning making bee bombs from clay and wildflower seeds that the children
took home to plant in their gardens. We also read a book about worms together and learned
about how worms help seeds grow and the different ways they improve the soil. We then
had fun running around the forest area collecting old leaves to add to our early years
wormery that would be left in the classroom for observation. The children all took turns to
hold the worms and report on how they felt and what parts of the bodies they could see, they
then helped fill the observation wormery with sand and coir and worm food. The children will
watch to see how the worms eat the food that they put in and see how they turn it into worm
castings.

With donations like those made by Adaptive Control Solutions and Greener Waste
Technology, The Little Land Project can continue to support the improvement of forest school
provisions in schools and continue their goal to improve biodiversity in community urban
spaces- using the outdoors as a place of sanctuary for different community groups.
